We cut the soles of our feet on the barnacle encrusted stones of Kopachuck State Park
and we were alone. Cutts Island rose defiantly out of the calm,
sailboats tilted to port on their keels as the muddy earth had risen to greet them. The only sounds,
laboring breaths of a harbor seal stealing a snack by the light of a harvest moon,
the steady lapping of the tides against our feet.
We swam for hours under the starlit skies of the Puget Sound
and suddenly I knew.

Ages of Exhausted ExistenceIn the ten minutes where theAges of Exhausted Existence
moon has receded yet the sun will not rise
the world is asleep and
the streets are neither light nor dark.
The cosmic refusal to define one’s self
as night or day
reflects the state of dreaming the
inhabitants of slumber reside within.
Streetlights flicker in indecision
while aged automobiles of generations
whose paint peels to the oil slicked sidewalks
lie below and turn themselves over,
pumping eternities of exhaust out their tailpipes
as owners, still sleeping, pump thoughts through their own.
